Colo. Teen Planning to Take Photos on Property Is Shot in Face After Homeowner Tells Boyfriend About Trespassers
The teens were in their car, parked on a public road, when police allege the boyfriend shot the 17-year-old driver through the windshield
The two teens had parked outside the gated Colorado home, jumped the fence and looked around for the owner, hoping to take homecoming photographs on the property, a 17-year-old later told authorities.
The boys – whose names have not been released – returned to their car, which was parked on a public roadway, and started writing the woman a letter requesting permission, Jacki Kelly of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office tells PEOPLE.
But they were allegedly disrupted when a man pulled up beside them, blocking the teens in as he exited his truck before firing a bullet through the windshield, striking the 17-year-old driver in the face, says Kelly.
The responding deputy recovered the gun used in the shooting inside the man’s truck, according to a press release by the sheriff’s office.
Brent Metz, 38, was arrested in connection to the Tuesday, Sept. 10 shooting and booked into jail on one charge of first-degree assault, two counts each of felony menacing and reckless endangerment and one charge of illegal discharge of a firearm, per the sheriff’s office.
Metz posted his $5,000 bond at 5:30 p.m. the following day, according to Kelly.
The 17-year-old was released from the hospital Thursday, Sept. 12 and is recovering at home, she says.
Deputies were dispatched to the Conifer, Colo., residence at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, after the homeowner — a woman who is not named in the release and who Kelly says is not facing any charges — called to report two trespassers on her property. Investigators say she also called her boyfriend, Metz, regarding the teens.

As the deputy approached the two vehicles, he saw the 17-year-old “bleeding heavily from his face,” while his 16-year-old friend held a T-shirt to the wounds in an effort to stop the bleeding, according to the sheriff’s office press release.
Before the 17-year-old was taken to the hospital by ambulance, he told authorities that Metz – who was standing with the teens when the deputy arrived and who the boys did not know – had shot him.
The 17-year-old told the deputy that the boys had walked up the homeowner’s driveway, and when no one seemed to be there, had walked around the property in search of the owner.
It was not immediately clear if Metz has retained a lawyer or entered a plea to the charges.
His next in-person court date – for a return filing of charges hearing, per his online docket – is slated for Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m.
Kelly says the investigation is ongoing.
