Colin Kaepernick is in 'Madden 22' and has a better overall rating than several current starters
Former quarterback Colin Kaepernick made it into the latest edition of “Madden” despite still not having a team to play for in the NFL.
Based on the overall rating that the annual video game series gave him, however, several teams may want to swap out their current starter for Kaepernick.
The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback received an 81 overall rating in “Madden 22”, which was released Thursday. That’s better than what more than half of starting quarterbacks in the league received in "Madden 22."
Kaepernick was right in line with Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who also received an 81 overall rating. There were several notable quarterbacks behind Kaepernick, including Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins, Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger, Detroit’s Jared Goff, New England’s Cam Newton, San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppolo and Indianapolis’ Carson Wentz, to name a few.
There were 14 quarterbacks listed better than Kaepernick. Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes led the way with a 99 overall rating. Tom Brady came in second with a 97 overall rating, though he was followed closely by Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson.
Kaepernick hasn’t played in the league since the 2016 season, when he started kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial and social injustices throughout the United States. That form of protest is now commonly seen across the sports world, however Kaepernick’s protest initially caused a massive uproar and essentially led to him being exiled from the NFL.
He reached an undisclosed settlement with the league in 2019 in a collusion grievance that accused the NFL of blackballing him.
Though it doesn’t look like any team is close to bringing Kaepernick in for real this season, “Madden” players will still be able to utilize him — and could even see a massive upgrade for their favorite team.
