College Gymnast Kara Welsh Fatally Shot Near Wisconsin Campus

Authorities arrested a man in the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old national title-winning gymnast at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Whitewater police said in a news release that Kara Welsh was shot multiple times by a 23-year-old man after a fight between the two at an apartment near campus late Friday.

Authorities have not released the name of the suspect, but police stated in the release that the man was “known to the deceased female.”

The suspect was taken to Walworth County Jail and booked on suspicion of first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety while armed and disorderly conduct while armed, police said in an updated news release.

HuffPost has reached out to Whitewater police and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for comment.

University Chancellor Corey King announced Welsh’s death Saturday in a messageto students, faculty and staff members on the school’s site.

“We know the news of Kara’s death is heartbreaking for our close-knit university community,” King said. “It is a time when we are all called upon to support one another, to process, and to grieve.”

“Kara was majoring in management in our College of Business and Economics and was a standout member of the Warhawk gymnastics team, winning an individual national title on the vault in 2023,” he added.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team also mourned Welsh’s death on X, formerly Twitter.

“We offer our deepest condolences to Kara’s family, friends and teammates at @UWWGymnastics,” they wrote Sunday.
