Nike's all-black Colin Kaepernick jersey honoring 4 years since taking a knee sells out

Nike is honoring the four years since former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem with a black monochromatic jersey featuring his No. 7.

The Icon Jersey 2.0 went on sale Thursday morning and quickly sold out.

Kaepernick’s No. 7 ‘greater than football’

Nike revealed photos of the “Triple Black” jersey on Wednesday acknowledging Kaepernick’s work to “advance the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities.” The company wrote in its announcement:

Through his continuous commitment, the number 7 jersey has become an iconic symbol for progress and positive change. Colin and Nike team up together once again, this time with a Triple Black jersey, paying homage to the anniversary of Kaepernick seeking what’s true.

True to each other. True to the movement. True to 7.

“True to 7” is on the inside collar of the all-black jersey. Kaepernick wrote in his own Instagram reveal the number has “come to represent something greater than football, something greater than me.”

He shared photos of the jersey with a background of handwritten phrases and thoughts. His caption in full:

Four years ago, I took a knee to protest against systemic racism and social injustice. It was that day that the number on my jersey would come to represent something greater than football, something greater than me.

Since then, the number 7 jersey has become a symbol for advancing the liberation and well-being of Black & Brown communities. Thank you for staying True.

There is a stylized K on the front collar and the jocktag includes the Nike Swoosh, a K and Kaepernick’s afro logo.

The jerseys went on sale at 10 a.m. ET at $150 each and people looking to buy it found they sold out quickly. Dozens of people replied to Nike on Twitter saying they had their app open and payment ready to go, but within seconds it said “sold out.”

It’s the second time a Kaepernick jersey launch with Nike has sold out shortly after opening period. The company released an all-black “Icon Jersey” with a white No. 7 on the front in February 2019. In that instance, Kaepernick took to social media about 10 hours later to say they had sold out.

And in October 2018, a “Kaepernick icon tee” sold out in a couple of hours. It’s unclear how many jerseys and T-shirts Nike had available for any of the launches.

Kaepernick, 32, has not played in the NFL since the 2016 season, in which he gained attention for kneeling during the anthem. No team has signed him since he became a free agent. He reached a financial settlement with the league after accusing it of blackballing him and teammate Eric Reid.
