Coles shopper makes shocking discovery inside spinach: 'I'm traumatised'

A shocked Coles shopper has found a not-so-nice addition inside his pre-washed packet of baby spinach.

Tagging Coles in a Facebook post, the Melbourne shopper revealed he’d discovered a huge spider inside the bag of spinach after opening it.

“Thanks for the surprise Coles in our baby spinach,” he wrote alongside a picture of the unsightly huntsman.

The Australian-grown baby spinach bag is labelled “washed and ready to eat”, however most consumers would probably choose not to chow down on the contents of this bag.

The unexpected find has also left fellow shoppers feeling uneasy, with one saying “I’m traumatised” after seeing the man's social media post.

In a separate incident, another Coles shopper revealed he’d recently had a similar experience with a pre-packed bag of Coles Kitchen Coleslaw.

Upon opening the bag and mixing the salad with some mayo, the shopper said he “noticed something crawling around in there” before realising there was a little worm inside.

“Thought I [would] bring this to your attention Coles,” the customer wrote on the supermarket’s Facebook page alongside a video of the discovery.

“We were about to give some of this salad to our little girl too before the wife saw it wriggling through the salad.”

The customer added that he’s “not sure” how it would have got into the pre-washed mix but warned other customers to be more careful when buying packaged salad mixes.

“I recommend to your customers to ignore the ‘washed and ready to eat’ label on the packet and always wash and inspect this type and similar products,” he said.

Coles responds to complaints

A Coles spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia that the supermarket “takes the quality of all our products seriously” and that customers who make such a discovery should contact them.

“We urge customers with a complaint to contact our Customer Care team so we can follow up their concerns,” the spokesperson said.

“As always we encourage customers to return any item they’re not 100% happy with to their nearest store for a full refund or replacement.”

Deadly spider found in fresh produce

It’s not just Coles customers who are finding creepy crawlies in their fresh produce and salad mixes lately.

Aldi customers have also reported creepy crawlies hiding inside their fresh fruit and vegetables.

Within a matter of weeks, one woman discovered a redback spider inside her bunch of grapes, while another found a scorpion nestled inside her broccoli.

“Bought grapes from Aldi on Thursday, been eating them on and off. They have been in the fridge until today only to find this spider in the middle...OMG YUK!!!” she wrote alongside a picture of the spider nestled inside the grapes.

Meanwhile, a second customer said her father-in-law found a scorpion after purchasing fresh produce from the Aldi Ulladulla store.

“...After I had cut it up and started cooking it, I realised something was crawling around my chopping board,” she wrote on social media.

“It turns out a scorpion was living in the broccoli.”

While fellow Aldi customers said it was a “good sign” and meant the fruit and veggies were “fresh,” an Aldi spokesperson said it is important to report these finds.

"We strongly encourage customers to bring issues to our attention directly so we can review," the spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia at the time.

"Without contact with the customer, we can confirm that it is very unusual and that this broccoli hitchhiker isn’t where they belong — which is likely back on our Aussie producers’ farm."
