Coles makes major animal-friendly move by removing caged eggs from shelves
Supermarket Coles have removed all caged eggs from its Western Australian stores and there are plans for all Coles locations to follow the animal friendly move.
“Since we moved all our Coles Own Brand eggs to cage free in 2013, we have been working with our proprietary egg suppliers to increase production of cage free eggs,” a Coles spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia.
And within four years, the supermarket giant hopes that all Coles stores in Australia will be cage free.
“We are now expanding this commitment to only sell cage free shell eggs in our supermarkets by 2023,” a Coles spokesperson said.
The move will also eventually lead to all Coles Own Brand products using only cage free eggs as ingredients.
Animal lovers will be pleased to know that Coles is taking the ‘free range and barn laid standards’ seriously when it comes to Coles Own Brand products.
“Hens are free to display their natural behaviours by having access to nest boxes, perches and litter for dust bathing,” Coles said.
And when hens aren’t busy laying eggs, they will get some free time to do as they please.
“The Coles Own Brand free range standard requires that during the day hens have easy access to an outdoor range, shade from the sun and space to roam,” Coles told Yahoo News.
