Coles accused of sexism over controversial Mother's Day display

Coles customers have accused a store of being sexist after a Mother’s Day display included washing powder and sanitary items among its suggested gifts.

A picture posted to Facebook shows the household items nestled among keep cups, socks, slippers and throw rugs.

“Washing powder. In the Mother’s Day section. Are you f*****g kidding me Coles?” the woman who posted the photo wrote.

Other customers were also shocked by the gift selection at the Coles store, with another claiming there were also oven mits.

“And pads like your mum wants some pads for Mother’s Day,” one wrote.

“Get back in the kitchen,” another added sarcastically.

“Bet it’s not there for Father’s day,” a third suggested.

One joked it was so a mum could pick up the essentials while buying her own Mother’s Day present.

“They’re missing a broom,” somebody commented.

“Oh how I would’ve loved a Mother’s Day gift with sanitary products. Thanks Coles,” another said.

A Coles spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia in a statement the supermarket celebrated all mums, grandmas, aunties, stepmothers and all of the important women in our lives on Mother’s Day.

“Our annual range of Mother’s Day gifts, which include treats like slippers, mugs and chocolates, are popular with our customers and are usually displayed in a special section of our store, often alongside other promotions,” the spokesperson said.

“It was not our intention to offend customers with the placement of these products and we’ll ensure we review the layout in our stores in future.”
