Coldplay and Natalie Imbruglia perform tribute to Olivia Newton-John

Coldplay and Natalie Imbruglia have joined forces to pay tribute to Olivia Newton-John, who passed away last week at 73 after a 30-year battle with cancer.

The artists teamed up to perform Summer Nights from the hit musical Grease on Tuesday evening during Coldplay’s concert at London’s Wembley Stadium, with lead singer Chris Martin taking on John Travolta’s part while Natalie sang Olivia’s.

Five-time Grammy award winner Jacob Collier also played the piano and provided vocals for the song’s chorus.

Olivia and John respectively starred as Sandy Olsson and Danny Zuko in the 1978 musical film, which helped launch the Australian singer and actress to a new level of fame.

Before singing Summer Nights for the crowd of up to 90,000 people, the musicians performed Natalie’s 1997 debut single Torn.

Coldplay are currently on their Music of the Spheres World Tour in support of their ninth studio album and are set to tour South America next month for the final leg.

At previous locations the band have brought out Kelly Rowland to perform Destiny Child’s Independent Women Part 1, Bruce Springsteen to perform Working on a Dream and Dancing in the Dark, and Kylie Minogue to perform Can’t Get You Out of My Head.

‘She was magic’

Following Olivia Newton-John’s passing last week, Natalie took to Instagram to say that she was “devastated” by the news.

“When I was a little girl I used to close my eyes and sing her songs and dream of one day being on a stage somewhere, singing, just like her,” she wrote alongside a gallery of photos of the Australian icon.

“She was magic. A huge inspiration to me and so many other young kids who were singing into their hairbrushes. The purity of her voice, her grace… and she sang from the heart. She was and always will be a shining light in this world.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to her loved ones at this very difficult time”.

Tributes have also flowed from other global celebrities, including Madonna, Hugh Jackman, Rebel Wilson, Barbra Streisand, Kylie Minogue and John Travolta.

“My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible,” her Grease co-star wrote on social media.

"I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John!”
