Christmas lights urgently recalled over electrocution risk

A set of festive Christmas lights has been recalled over fears of electrocution, after some displays were found to have exposed wiring.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a recall of Ausway Pacific Christmas Outdoor Light Displays with model number D1222 on Saturday.

The consumer watchdog warned anyone with the affected lights to unplug the set immediately.

“On some lights, the controller is incorrectly wired, leading to the possibility of exposed wires,” the ACCC said.

“If the controller is faulty and the wires are exposed, there is a risk of electrical shock or serious harm to the user.”

The lights were available for purchase between October 1 and November 12 this year, and were sold via crazysales.com.au, eBay, Kogan and mydeal.com.au.

Anyone who purchased the lights can return them for a full refund or replacement.

Earlier this week, shoppers were warned about using Christmas lights which don’t meet Australian safety standards.

Fair Trading senior investigator Glen Toole showed Seven News some lights he purchased from a $2 store.

“The bulb breaks easily and exposes live parts,” he said.

He added another imported product didn’t have an approval rating and “should never have been sold in Australia”.
