China refuses to participate in Ukrainian peace summit in Switzerland

Beijing rejected the invitation because its conditions about Russia's participation in the summit and “a fair discussion of all proposals” were not met, Reuters reported, citing  four sources familiar with the matter on May 31.

Chinese Foreign Ministry has not officially confirmed the information, but earlier a spokesperson for the ministry said that China supports a peace conference with equal participation of all parties.

Global Peace Summit in Switzerland, China and Russia case

In January 2024, Kyiv invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to participate in a planned “peace summit” of world leaders in Switzerland, Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Ihor Zhovkva told Reuters. At the same time, China was absent from the peace formula summit in Malta in November 2023.

Switzerland has also asked China to participate in the Global Peace Summit.

Global Peace Summit in Switzerland at the level of country leaders will take place on June 15-16. Russia will not attend it.

Head of the Office of President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, allowed Russia’s participation in Global Peace Summit, but not in the first inaugural meeting at the level of leaders, but in the following ones. At the same time, Swiss Foreign Ministry stated that peace process is “unthinkable” without Russia.
