'Absolutely horrendous': Girl, 8, killed after truck slams into rest spot
A child has died and at least four people have been seriously injured when a truck reportedly crashed into several parked cars at a rest area in the Macarthur region.
An eight-year-old girl died at the scene of the crash on the Hume Highway at Menangle on Friday afternoon.
Horrific photos from the scene show dozens of emergency workers responding to the accident, treating patients and assessing the situation.
“Arriving at this scene was unlike anything we have experienced as paramedics – it was absolutely horrendous,” inspector David Kynaston, duty operations manager for NSW Ambulance said.
“This is incredibly hard for the emergency services and the families involved who have to face the loss and injury of their loved ones.
“It’s extremely difficult for paramedics and other emergency services to be confronted with such carnage - it was a very traumatic scene with obviously a lot of chaos.”
Four other people have been injured, with one woman taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.
The other three, another woman and two men, are reported to be in serious but stable condition with head and leg injuries.
The male truck driver was not injured and will be taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
