Child found dead at playground near primary school


A child has died at a playground near a primary school in Darwin.

Northern Territory Police Senior Sergeant Matt Allen said the circumstances surrounding the death were being investigated but said it was not suspicious.

The child died at a playground near Wanguri Primary School on Wednesday night as a result of “misadventure”.

The NT Department of Education said it was offering support to the school.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family during this difficult time,” it said in a statement.

“The school principal has been in contact with the family today to offer support where possible.

“Counsellors have been working at the school from this morning and will remain here for as long as students and staff require.

“A letter has been sent to families this afternoon to extend support should they also require it either via the school counsellors or through EASA.”

Police said investigations were continuing and a report would be prepared for the coroner.
