Police say a man was on bail when he allegedly tried to rob a Victorian bank at knife point.

The 55-year-old Winchelsea man allegedly entered a Geelong bank about 2.20pm on Thursday and demanded cash while threatening staff with a knife, but fled the scene empty-handed before being arrested.

The man will face court in August on charges of armed robbery, assault with a weapon and committing offences while on bail, police said on Monday.
