French security staff rescued more than 8600 migrants who ran into distress at sea last year.

In 2020, the French authorities registered 868 attempts to cross the Channel with 9551 people involved.

The reports echo British figures, as officials recently said three times as many migrants had reached the country by crossing the Channel by boat, compared to in 2020.
