Centrelink adds 1,500 staff to answer calls as wait times blowout

More than 1,500 extra Centrelink staff have been announced after a surge in call waiting times.

The new jobs added by the Turnbull government are in addition to the 1,000 staff announced earlier this year.

Call waiting times have reportedly blown out to 12.5 minutes, up from 90 seconds under the Howard government.

Centrelink answers about 1,000,000 calls every week, but many people say their calls still go unanswered.
