Celebrity Hairstylist Jen Atkin Shares Emotional Photos and Powerful Message 1 Week After Losing Home in L.A. Fire

After documenting her family's evacuation, the hairstylist and Ouai founder urges her followers not to 'forget your kindness and compassion'

Jen Atkin is sharing an emotional update after losing her home in the Los Angeles wildfires.

On Wednesday, Jan. 15, Atkin, 44, posted an Instagram photo carousel featuring snapshots of her family's experience over the last week. The cover photo shows Atkin, her husband Mike Rosenthal, and their son River embracing and later in the post, the stylist is pictured crying.

In the caption, Atkin recapped the lessons she has learned from previous losses such as her home being robbed and the deaths of her dog, Chewy, and her father. She then continued, "After now losing our home we worked so hard for, and decades of belongings, I can now warn others to prepare for disaster. Have a plan. Get to really know and care for your neighbors, as ours are all holding one another up rn."

In the face of hardship, Atkin says that her family "has witnessed so much love, kindness, and compassion this past week."

"In my moment of loss I CHERISH it," she continues. "That will never be taken from us. Ever."

To conclude the caption, the Ouai founder urges: "As time moves on and we get back to our busy distracted lives, please don’t forget your kindness and compassion you feel so strongly rn. Link in my bio for how to help our precious LA 🫂♥️."

Atkin's post included multiple photos of flames ravaging the L.A. hills. The stylist also shared a video of her home before the fires as well as photos of the wreckage post-fire.

Also featured are some screenshots of text exchanges, including one from a neighbor informing Rosenthal that he and Atkin's house was destroyed.

On Wednesday, Jan. 8, the hairstylist began sharing updates about her family's evacuation.

"This is weird to post but our house is gone," she wrote on Instagram Stories along with a photo of herself crying. "We just got confirmation. Our whole area demolished. So many are displaced and feeling scared right now it's almost too much to comprehend."

Atkin continued that her neighbors are "taking care of one another and checking in and that's the theme for 2025."

The firestorm has quickly spread to different parts of the Los Angeles area and is already the most destructive in the city’s history. While the death toll remains unknown, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said at a press briefing on Thursday, Jan. 9. that as of Thursday morning, the Palisades fire had burned 17,234 acres, with 0% containment.
