CCTV shows man stabbed in Melbourne staggering for help, but being ignored

A man stabbed in a savage attacked was ignored by a dozen people as he staggered along a Melbourne street with blood trailing behind him.

The 60-year-old was assaulted outside a tram stop at Birrarung Marr on Friday and CCTV footage shows the man holding onto an overpass railing for support.

A number of passers-by, including tradesmen and a scooter rider, appear to ignore the seriously injured man.

He was not helped for three and a half hours, but someone eventually stopped and called an ambulance.

Police said the trail of blood behind the retired man was "approximately 80 metres long."

The man remains in hospital with serious head and back injuries.

The attack is believed to have been unprovoked.

"There is no suggestion that he was in trouble or did anything to prompt an attack," Detective Senior Constable Todd Greaney said.

"He's a 60-year-old male who's been seriously assaulted."
