Cat's miraculous survival after falling from 18th floor balcony

They say curiosity killed the cat but a British Shorthair is lucky to be alive after falling 18 storeys from a Melbourne apartment building.

Charlie fell from a Southbank complex last week and landed on a roof, according to a GoFundMe page.

The cat’s owner Amy Thompson wrote he survived but is now sporting a broken jaw and a fractured foot. Charlie is currently being fed through a feeding tube and has a cone around his neck.

“It was so distressing finding he had fallen from the balcony, and seeing him in so much pain,” she wrote.

“The vet said cats do this crazy thing where they flatten out and sort of float if they fall from higher levels (above the 11th floor), and they have worse injuries if they fall from lower levels!”

It’s possible Charlie will also need two teeth removed which were chipped in the fall.

He came off painkillers on Wednesday but will head to the vet to have stitches removed from his leg where he had a plate inserted.

Ms Thompson believes the vet bills will cost her nearly $5000. She also expects costs to incur from having to return home from work to feed him as she works as a contractor.

“I can't believe he survived the fall. I'm devastated this has happened but so relieved he survived,” she wrote.

So far more than $1200 has been raised to go towards Charlie’s vet bills.
