Carrie Bickmore's brutal shutdown by Matthew McConaughey

Their friendly chat may have been flowing freely at first but things got a little tense between A-lister Matthew McConaughey and The Project’s Carrie Bickmore when she brought up a topic that was clearly off-limits.

After speaking candidly about his parent’s wild relationship and that infamous naked bongo-playing incident during an interview on Wednesday night, the Oscar winner, 50, clammed right up when co-host Carrie turned the conversation to the upcoming US election.

The mum-of-three threw caution to the wind and asked the Texan what he thought of current president Donald Trump.

“How do I feel about him?” a suddenly stern Matthew responded. “I want a fuller context and a longer form to talk about that,” he added while shifting uncomfortably in his seat.

“If I said something to you now, one line could be taken out of context and could be put into a headline, so I don’t want to take the chance for that,” he explained as a stunned Carrie looked on.

“I need a longer forum where I know it’s word for word (and) everything I’m saying is being broadcast.”

The interview was soon wrapped up after the awkward moment which appears to have been left out of the videos uploaded to The Project’s official Twitter and YouTube pages.

Matthew was slightly more forthcoming about his political views earlier in the chat, revealing that he was “concerned” about the state of his home country at the moment.

“We are in the middle of what is a great divide. I hope we don’t go into a civil war of some kind when we get past this election.

“I hope that enough of the votes come in clearly.”

The Dallas Buyer’s Club star also spoke about his newly-released memoir, Greenlights, in which he opens up about his experiences with sexual assault as a teen.

In the explosive book, he reveals that he was “blackmailed” into losing his virginity when he was 15 and at 18 was assaulted by a man in a van.
