Cars trapped by falling tree as extreme winds and dust storms lash NSW

Several people have been injured after a tree fell across a major Sydney highway and crushed multiple cars.

The incident unfolded Friday afternoon on the Hume Highway in Warwick Farm, about 30 kilometres west of the CBD.

Three people were taken to Liverpool Hospital, all believed to be from separate vehicles, with one woman in her 40s sustaining a head injury.

Two others had very minor injuries including bumps and bruises, with all three in a stable condition, NSW Ambulance told Yahoo News Australia.

Peak-hour traffic is expected to be seriously affected, with the highway closed in both directions at Governor Macquarie Drive and Orange Grove Road.

The tree fall may have been the result of damaging winds currently lashing Sydney’s eastern districts.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning just before 5pm for those in the eastern districts.

Damaging winds averaging 70km/h and peak gusts in excess of 90km/h were expected in the area throughout the afternoon and evening as a cold front passed.
