Lucky escape after Sydney motorist plunges six metres into factory roof

A motorist has miraculously crawled out of a Volkswagen unharmed, after smashing through a fence and landing on a roof six metres below.

Emergency services arrived at the intersection on John Street in Sydney’s inner west, just after 3pm on Monday after reports a car was perched on the roof of Raffan, Kelaher and Thomas Auctioneers.

Nobody was injured in the incident but the Leichhardt building, where the car remains perched, will be blocked off until authorities can confirm it’s safe for workers to return.

The car can be seen embedded in the roof behind police tape.

Business owner Phillip Thomas told 9News that everyone fled the building as soon as they heard the collision but it may have been tragic if the incident had happened moments earlier.

"Fifteen minutes earlier, one of our staff was working virtually underneath where the car landed," he said.

Police told Yahoo News Australia that investigations into the cause of the incident are continuing.

The driver of the car, who police say was the only person inside the vehicle, is assisting police with the investigation.

At the time of publication, emergency services were still at the scene.
