Cans, bottles seized over refund concerns

Thousands of cans and bottles have been seized in South Australia's Barossa Valley as authorities investigate if they came from Victoria in an attempt to illegally claim container deposits.

A truck with 125 bales of cans and bottles was pulled over at Willaston on Friday with the 38-year-old driver reported for traffic offences.

His truck was impounded and Environment Protection Authority officials have seized his load as it checks where the containers came from.

The beverage industry in South Australia provides a 10 cent refund on each drink container but only if they were sold in SA.

The maximum penalty for attempting to seek a refund for interstate containers is a $30,000 fine.
