Palace confirms what Camilla's title will be when Charles becomes king

It’s a question that’s been playing on royal fans’ minds since Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005 and now Clarence House has confirmed what the Duchess of Cornwall’s title will be once her husband ascends the throne.

Yesterday, the Daily Star reported that Prince Charles was keen for his 72-year-old wife to be known as ‘Queen Consort’ once his beloved mother, Queen Elizabeth II passes away.

However, Clarence House has firmly put those rumours to bed, releasing a statement to the publication saying: “The intention is for The Duchess to be known as Princess Consort when The Prince accedes to the throne.”

While Camilla will actually be known as the Queen Consort by law, it’s thought that she doesn’t want to use that title after the public outcry over her affair with Prince Charles back when he was married to Princess Diana.

Instead, she’ll happily take on the Princess Consort title and stand by her husband’s side as he presides over The Firm.

It’s alleged to be the same reason Camilla opted to go by the title of Duchess of Cornwall and not the Princess of Wales when she married Prince Charles, presumably out of respect for Diana.

Because she is married to the Prince of Wales, technically Camilla is also the Princess of Wales.

The topic of Camilla’s title seems to have been reared its head again after Clarence House took down a question from the ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ section of the Prince’s official website, asking if Camilla would ever become Queen.

“As was explained at the time of their wedding in April 2005, it is intended that The Duchess will be known as HRH The Princess Consort when The Prince of Wales accedes to The Throne,” the website used to read.

However, according to Clarence House, the question was merely taken down as they had not received any queries on the matter in the last while and that section is constantly updated with new questions from the public.

British royal protocol dictates that when a woman marries a king, she becomes a royal and adopts the corresponding title of ‘Queen’, but that isn’t the same for men.

When a queen marries, her husband doesn’t automatically become ‘King’, unless he’s already a king in his own right – hence why Queen Elizabeth’s husband isn’t ‘King’ Philip.
