Police have done early-morning car stops in Melbourne's southeast as they try and piece together whether a resident used reasonable force on a trespasser who later died.
Two men got into a fight at Dandenong North about 5am on Monday after a woman saw a suspicious man in her front yard and called her husband who confronted the man.
The two men went down the road and a fight took place, with the 37-year-old left unconscious and later dying in hospital, while the 31-year-old Dandenong North man was interviewed and released by police.
Homicide detectives on Wednesday were in the neighbourhood about 5am on Wednesday to stop cars and appeal for information from residents.
Detective Inspector Tim Day said police are trying to work out if reasonable force was used in the altercation.
