A bus carrying passengers in southwestern Pakistan has overturned, killing at least 14 people.

The bus was travelling to the southern port city of Karachi from the province of Balochistan when it crashed in the town of Lasbela, police officer Imran Baloch said.

At least 10 people, most of them in a critical condition, were being treated at the town's hospital.

"The death toll may go up," Baloch said.

Bad roads, poorly maintained vehicles and a substandard traffic safety regime cause numerous accidents in Pakistan.

More than 5000 people die in traffic accidents every year, according to Pakistani government statistics.
