At least 24 people have been killed and 16 others injured when a passenger bus veered off a road in western Nepal, police say.

The accident occurred when a long-haul passenger bus carrying about 40 people lost control and fell off the road in Mugu district, according to Nepal police spokesperson Basanta Bahadur Kunwar.

"The bus was coming home from Nepalgunj and headed to Gamgadhi of Mugu district. Details about the deceased are yet to be collected," Kunwar told DPA.

Some of the injured are in critical condition and were being airlifted to various hospitals.

Many of the deceased are believed to be migrants returning from India to celebrate the Dashain festival with their families.
