Bryson DeChambeau withdraws from Sony Open with wrist injury

Bryson DeChambeau won’t participate in the Sony Open this week after all.

DeChambeau withdrew from the second Hawaii event on Monday morning with a sore wrist, his agent said.

DeChambeau’s wrist has flared up in recent weeks, his agent told the Golf Channel, and playing in back-to-back weeks is something he feels he isn’t ready to do yet. Many didn’t expect the eight-time PGA Tour winner to play in the Sony Open, as he was a late addition on Friday.

DeChambeau finished T25 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Sunday after a final round 72. That marked just his first event of the season, outside of the unofficial Hero World Challenge. He also played against Brooks Koepka in the latest edition of The Match late last year.

It’s unclear when DeChambeau will play again on Tour. He is set to compete in the Saudi International in February.

DeChambeau had nine top-10 finishes on Tour last season, including at both the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship.

The Sony Open will start on Thursday at Waialae Country Club. Cameron Smith — who set a new Tour scoring record during his win at the Sentry Tournament of Champions — is listed as a +900 favorite on BetMGM.
