Shot brothers 'assaulted seven Victorian police officers'
At least seven police officers were allegedly assaulted by two brothers during a violent stand-off near the NSW-Victorian border, which ended with the siblings being shot.
Joshua Clavell, 30, remained too poorly to attend Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday, but documents revealed details of the allegations against him, while his brother Joel remained hospitalised in a critical condition.
Mr Clavell's lawyer told the court he was unable to attend as he remains at St Vincents Hospital in Melbourne with serious injuries suffered as a result of the shooting.
"He is likely to remain in hospital for at least two weeks," the lawyer said, adding he had earlier in the day provided consent over the phone for the case to proceed in his absence.
Mr Clavell and his 19-year-old brother, Joel, were shot near a Barnawartha North campground in Victoria last Wednesday as local police tried to conduct a counter-terror assessment.
The officers had been trying to intercept the pair to assess the older brother's threat level when both men allegedly rammed their car and lunged at police with a knife and a tomahawk.
Police later revealed Mr Clavell was on a terror watch list and had a longstanding hatred of police.
On Monday he was extradited from NSW where he had been treated at Albury Hospital under police guard and was charged with 11 offences including assaulting seven police officers.
Court documents reveal he charged at police "with a large knife" which put an officer "in danger of death".
The officers' identities were not made public by the court, but included ranks ranging from from constable to sergeant.
Mr Clavell was also charged with intentionally exposing police to risk and damaging an emergency services vehicle by reckless driving.
There was no application for bail and the matter will return to court for a committal case conference before magistrate Jo Metcalf on September 9.
Joel Clavell has not been charged but remains under police guard in Melbourne's Alfred hospital in a critical but stable condition.
