The teen, who is the younger brother of star forward Payne Haas, was charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of controlled drug, and take part supply prohibited drug (large commercial quantity).

Australian Border Force officers had previously intercepted two parcels from the United States containing a combined 4kg of methamphetamine, with a street value of $3.5 million.

Mr Haas has been in custody on remand since his arrest after being refused bail at Maitland Local Court in the days following.

His lawyers are now applying to the NSW Supreme Court to get him released.

Najla El Badawi, appearing as agent for Mr Haas’ lawyer, told the court she was seeking to get an “urgent listing” for a bail hearing.

“In relation to the reasons for why the hearing should be expedited, I’m instructed this is the first time he is in custody and he is of young age,” Ms El Badawi told the court.

“His partner has been suffering mental health issues since (him) being incarcerated, she has pregnancy symptoms and mental health issues.”

The registrar listed the matter for Wednesday September 13 with an estimate of 45 minutes.

He ordered Mr Haas’ lawyers to file submissions by September 7.

The charges come months after the teenager was discharged from Gold Coast University Hospital after a suspected drug overdose.
