'I broke my face': Teen speaks out after falling 15 metres off bridge while taking selfie
A teen who fell 15 metres off a bridge several month ago is now speaking out about the dangers of taking risky selfies after narrowly escaping death.
Triston Bailey, 18, was joined by his friends on the Margaret McDermott bridge overlooking Dallas, Texas, when Bailey decided that he wanted to take a photo of himself.
To this day, he doesn’t remember what happened next, but his friends will never forget it.
“They say we stopped on the side of the bridge to take some pictures and that I was going over the concrete barriers,” Bailey told KTVT.
“They heard me scream and they thought I was joking.”
Unfortunately, he wasn’t.
Bailey fell 15 metres (50 feet) from the bridge to the ground beneath, leaving an imprint with his body, and putting him in the hospital.
“I broke my pelvis, I had a rib fracture, a punctured lung,” Bailey explained.
“I broke my face a whole bunch and I lacerated my spleen.”
According to Dr J Darryl Amos, chief of trauma with Methodist Health System where Bailey was treated, the teen is lucky that he wasn’t more severely injured.
“It’s amazing that he didn’t snap his neck. It’s amazing that he’s not a paraplegic — or broke his back,” Dr Amos told KTVT.
“It’s truly miraculous.”
A study done by researchers with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences reveals that more than 250 deaths have occurred as a result of selfies over a span of six years, with a majority of victims being 23-year-old men.
