Tourist dies after 'tripping over suitcase' and falling through glass door
A British man has died on holiday in Thailand after “tripping over his suitcase” and falling through glass doors.
Luke Goodere died after suffering a fatal abdominal injury after being pierced by a shard of glass, it was reported.
Police said the 33-year-old had got up to use the toilet in his hotel room in the early hours of the morning.
Goodere was originally from Skegness but had stopped off in Thailand while returning to his home in Sydney, Australia.
He had been visiting his family, his first trip to the UK in more than two years.
His family have set up a GoFundMe page to repatriate his body, which has raised £8,420.
“A tragic event in Thailand has left this family utterly heartbroken and destroyed,” reads the page.
“Receiving a phone [call] that your child has passed away is one a mother should never have to answer.
“Luke would give his last penny to any friend if he was asked.
“He would do anything to help anyone and now it is our time to give back and help him and his family in this awful time.”
Lincolnshire Live reported that a coroner heard how Luke had returned to his hotel on the island of Phi Phi after attending a festival.
He was reported as being fast asleep at 4am but found dead in his room just four hours later on the morning of April 11.
Coroner’s officer Charlotte Alexander said: “It is believed that it was some time after 4am and he’s fallen through the glass doors to the balcony.
“His suitcase was between the bed and the door, so potentially he had tripped.”
The cause of death was abdominal haemorrhage as a result of abdominal injury, according to the post mortem.
Coroner Paul Smith ruled the death was an accident.
“The best evidence is that he was socialising at a festival.
“He had consumed some alcohol and he and his friends returned to his accommodation.
“During the course of the night he got up from the bed and suffered an accidental fall and suffered an injury that led to his death.”
The Coroner said information from Thailand had been “sparse”, yet “the police investigation appears to have excluded the possibility of third party involvement.
After the hearing, Luke's dad Clive Goodere, a retired policeman, said his son had quit his job as a data analyst to "see the world".
