British backpacker raped on popular Thai holiday island

A 21-year-old British backpacker was allegedly raped by a Thai man while in Thailand taking part in the country’s new year celebrations.

The woman was travelling on her own in Koh Phi Phi, off the coast of Krabi in southern Thailand, at the time of the incident, which police said occurred about 3am local time on April 15, the Mirror reported.

She was walking back to her hostel but stopped and slumped to the ground outside a restaurant, where she was allegedly raped by a local man.

Police said she made contact the next morning about 10am fearing she had been raped, so they checked security vision and scoured the area for evidence.

The accused was arrested on April 17 and taken into police custody where he allegedly confessed to the rape.

“He has been taken to Krabi Provincial Police and (is) currently under the police custody,” a police spokesman said.

He is expected to face charges of rape and violent threatening behaviour against a person in a state of inability to resist.
