Brisbane mum on child cruelty charges

A Brisbane mother has faced court over child cruelty charges, after her two sons were found covered in urine and faeces.

The 20-year-old woman allegedly failed to make suitable care arrangements for her toddler kids, who were found with a dead possum in their outdoor play area.

Inside the home, floors were filled with soiled nappies and rubbish, which police described as having an 'overpowering bad smell'.

Police showed up to the address on May 3, where they discovered the four-year-old and his two-year-old brother wearing nappies that had not been changed.

Neighbours reported the situation to police, after the mother was allegedly seen entering a taxi at 10am, appearing as if she had been out all night.

When police knocked on the door, the eldest boy was said to have answered in a nappy 'full of faeces'.

“You do not open the door to anyone … you don’t even open the door for police,’’ his mum allegedly shouted.

Police say she originally refused to allow the officers to enter.

The woman said her boys were cared for by her sister and mother, but a subsequent follow-up by police revealed that to be untrue.

The woman was granted bail and will attend court next month.
