Brave neighbour's race to save girl being mauled by dog

A brave neighbour has raced to save a six-year-old girl who was being attacked by a dog on a driveway.

A Staffordshire Terrier mix mauled the little girl on a driveway in Villawood in Sydney’s west on Saturday morning before a 38-year-old man leapt into action.

He attempted to pull the dog away from the girl, which belonged to a different neighbour, Nine News reports.

While trying to save the girl, the man sustained a bite to his arm, while the girl suffered minor lacerations on her legs.

Footage aired on Channel Nine shows the little girl letting herself into a neighbour’s front yard before she stumbles out with the dog attached to her leg.

The neighbour then rushes to the girl’s aid and pulls the dog off her and throws it away, the dog then launches at the man.

The girl was rushed to Westmead’s Children’s Hospital and will need skin grafts according to Nine News.

The man was taken to Liverpool hospital where he received treatment for his wounds.

“It's very fortunate that [the attack] didn't reach that catastrophic stage,” Lucky Phrachanh from NSW Ambulance told Nine News.

Mr Phrachanh also said the neighbour did a pretty good job at saving the little girl.

Neighbours told Nine News the dog had been violent in the past, having recently attacked another dog which was walking past the house.

The dog was collected by the council and will be put down.
