Heartbreaking story behind little boy 'abandoned by parents' at side of road

A toddler has been abandoned at the side of a road with nothing but a quilt and a baby bottle after his parents reportedly gave him up because he had cerebral palsy.

The boy, who was believed to be over a year old, was found by the side of Huiwu Road in the city of Huixian, in China’s central Henan Province, on July 31.

Footage shows residents gathered around the child who is lying on the blue quilt with his arms to either side of him and a bottle of milk in one hand.

Huqiao Police Station officers as well as staff members from the city’s Civil Affairs Bureau were called to the scene in order to make a decision about what to do next.

With none of the boy’s parents or guardians in sight, the authorities decided to take him to the Huixian Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine for a check-up.

According to reports, doctors said the boy very likely had cerebral palsy and his parents may have abandoned him due to the incurable congenital condition.

The boy could neither speak nor walk on his own, but he was not found with any physical injuries.

The authorities said they wanted several hours for somebody to claim the child.

When no one arrived, they handed the child over to the Huixian Children’s Welfare Institute, where he would be kept as investigations continue.

The police said they were searching for the child’s parents who face charges for abandoning the toddler.
