Boy, 9, finds $6500 under floor mat while cleaning car
It’s not uncommon for a parent to give their child pocket money for doing chores around the home.
But one nine-year-old boy still can’t believe his luck after cleaning out his family’s new car led to a very big payday.
Landon Melvin, from Plainfield in the US state of Indiana, was recently tidying up his parents’ Chevy Suburban when he felt something unusual under one of the floor mats, local publication WRTV reported.
He lifted up the carpet to discover it was a large yellow envelope and ran inside to tell his dad, Michael Melvin.
"I was cleaning my dad's car when I looked under the floorboard and I found a package. I told my dad and he said, 'whatever’,” Landon told the publication.
"I was like he's nine. "You found something, okay?", "No, dad, I really did", I walk over. I think it's paperwork of some sort," Michael said.
Michael said it was then he alerted his wife and the trio emptied out the envelope on their bed.
Inside was US$5000 (A$6456) in cash and cheques.
Michael said he immediately knew they needed to track down the previous owners of the car he had purchased in September.
It turns out it was a family who had driven the vehicle to Florida in 2019 for a cruise and they had misplaced the money.
For his good deed, the grateful family gave Landon US$1000 (A$1291).
The nine-year-old says he’s stashed the cash in his room and has yet to decide on what he wants to do with it.
