The boxing 'disgrace' that brought young star to tears
A young Irish boxer has burst into tears over a major controversy that rocked a bout at the World Championships.
A light-welterweight quarter-final between Amy Broadhurst and India’s Simranjit Baath Kaur ended in high drama on Wednesday when many felt the judges made the wrong call.
Commentators were left in shock when Broadhurst missed out on a bronze medal despite appearing to soundly beat her opponent.
Controversy erupted in the third round when Kaur went down by what was deemed a slip, even though Broadhurst appeared to land a punch.
Then moments later, the referee hit Broadhurst with a questionable penalty for not striking with her fist.
Despite being docked a point, many felt that Broadhurst would win comfortably, but were left gobsmacked as judges awarded the win to Kaur.
Broadhurst burst into tears as the ref raised Kaur’s hand, the Indian winning by a scoreline of 27-29, 28-28, 29-27, 30-26, 29-27.
According to Darragh Murphy of Sportsjoe: “The fact that one judge, from Algeria, saw the fight as one-sided as 30-26 is nothing short of disgraceful.”
One TV commentator also said it was hard to agree with a 30-26 decision.
And they weren’t alone, with fans and pundits up in arms on social media.
Utter gank. Amy Broadhurst robbed there by India with a World Championships medal on the line. Fine knockdown ruled a slip, then v hardly docked a point. Sickening

Amy Broadhurst done out of a world bronze medal in India. Shambolic scoring by the judges. Hard to take.
