A bone discovered in a Nottingham footpath was not human remains, police have said.

Officers were called to Top Valley Way, in Top Valley, shortly after 19:30 BST on Friday.

Detectives said tests to find out if the bone was from a human took place on Saturday.

But following forensic examinations and a thorough search of the area, police confirmed the bone belonged to an animal.

The footpath was closed after the discovery, but the cordon is now being removed.

Ch Insp Lisa Murray, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “I want to thank the community for their patience while we investigated this incident and for their assistance with our enquiries.

“When we get reports of this nature it’s essential we carry out a full investigation so thank you to everyone in the Top Valley community for being understanding.

“The bone has been removed from the area and our officers will now be closing the scene.”
