Bombshell report reveals situation inside Sydney's cracked Opal Tower

After weeks of uncertainty hanging over the heads of Sydney’s Opal Tower residents, they have now been told more than 100 apartments can’t be lived in while the building is repaired.

Residents have been delivered a second blow as they continue to live in temporary accommodation, more than three weeks after the first cracks were noticed in the 36-storey building they had been calling home.

An independent review into the cracked Opal Tower found that although the building is structurally sound it would require “significant rectification works”, with every floor impacted by repairs.

An interim report released on Tuesday ruled out dodgy materials and extreme weather causing the large cracks on Christmas Eve.

A report was given to residents revealing major works will be carried out on levels 10 and four, however 105 apartments spread across every level will be directly affected by repair work.

Builders will require access to 11 more, while the other 226 have been deemed safe for residents to return home.

“I personally do not want to live in a building where there is major construction going on. I have safety concerns as I have two small children,” resident Jennifer Fong told 7 News.

“I’m also a shift worker, as is my husband, so we also have concerns about noise.”

Builders Icon issued a statement, saying: “We assure all residents reoccupying their apartments that they will not be impacted by the works being undertaken.”

Residents had their emergency accommodation extended for another week with many reluctant to move back in. They say the latest report does not give enough information about the repair work and they are not convinced the building is safe.

There is still no clear timeline of how long the work will take to complete.
