Body in submerged car off NSW boat ramp

A man's body has been found inside a submerged car off a boat ramp in Port Stephens in the NSW Hunter region.

Emergency services were called to Soldiers Point just after 4.30am on Sunday after reports a vehicle was in the water.

Police found a fully submerged white hatchback in the water.

The body of a man, yet to be formally identified, was found in the car.

A crime scene has been established and a recovery operation involving SES volunteers and police divers is underway.

The boat ramp will be closed until later on Sunday, police said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
