A body has been found near a school in Melbourne's southeast, sparking a homicide squad investigation.

Police have identified the dead man as a 47-year-old from Cranbourne East and say his death is suspicious.

But the exact circumstances have not been determined and it's also unclear how long his body lay there before it was discovered.

Passers-by spotted the man's body at Lesdon Avenue in Cranbourne's Donnelly Recreational Reserve, opposite the Rangebank Primary School, about 7.15am on Friday.

Photographs from the scene showed the body, covered by a white blanket, could be seen through the gates of the school.

The school was closed after a request from Victoria Police.

"The school is working with families to manage any disruption this may cause," a Department of Education spokeswoman told AAP on Friday.

"We know that hearing about incidents like this can be traumatic for young students and the department is working closely with the school to ensure support is provided for anyone who needs it."

Investigators want to talk to anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area on Thursday night and are also appealing for dash-cam footage from the area over the previous 24 hours.
