A boot in a wheelie bin at a self-storage facility in Melbourne's southeast has led to the discovery of human remains.
A worker told reporters after Friday's discovery that the bin was wrapped in bungee cords and is understood to have been filled with straw and dirt near the back of an Oakleigh South warehouse.
He had been helping clean out the facility after the business changed hands.
"That's when they found a wheelie bin inside there which was tied up with Occy straps and then they opened that up and found a boot in there and the boot was attached to a body," the worker told ABC TV.
It is not known if the remains belong to a man or a woman.
Police were called to the Milgate Street address shortly after 11am on Friday.
Homicide Squad detectives, the forensics team and SES workers are at the scene.
The area remained cordoned off and bags of evidence have been removed from the site.
