After several migrant boat accidents, 49 bodies have been recovered off Tunisia's coast, a spokesperson for the local security forces says.

Four boats sank off the city of Sfax in the south of the country in the past five days, the spokesperson added.

Passengers came from countries south of the Sahara and were on their way to Europe.

As the weather conditions are stable at the moment, a large number of migrants are attempting the crossing to Italy from Tunisia and Libya.

According to the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES), about 3000 migrants have arrived on the Italian coast from Tunisia since the beginning of the year.

The non-governmental organisation said there were more than 1100 in June alone.
