Blinken pressed Lavrov on nuke treaty, captives, and Ukraine

STORY: "I spoke briefly with Russia's foreign minister, Lavrov, on the margins of our G20 meeting today," Blinken told reporters.

He said he urged Russia to reverse its "irresponsible" decision on the New START nuclear treaty.

"I told the foreign minister that no matter what else is happening in the world or in our relationship, the United States will always be ready to engage and act on strategic arms control," Blinken said.

Blinken said he also called for Russia to release detained U.S. citizen Paul Whelan, and told Lavrov that Washington was prepared to support Ukraine to defend itself for as long as it takes.
