Bizarre twist in photo of woman with trolleys filled with baby formula boxes

It’s the supermarket fiasco that continues to infuriate shoppers around the country, but Woolworths insists the latest baby formula incident isn’t what it seems.

Pictured outside the Hurstville store in Sydney’s south on Friday, a woman stands next to two trolleys overflowing with baby formula boxes.

“The 2 tin can per transaction doesn’t do jack,” an angry shopper captioned the image on Facebook.

“The shelves are bare everyday. They just load up a trolley of boxes and perform multiple transactions.”

One shocked social media user suggested he overpower the woman, steal the trolley and take it back to the store.

But a Woolworths spokesperson said that wouldn’t be necessary, telling Yahoo7 News that shopper had misinterpreted the situation.

“The boxes depicted in the trolley were empty. They did not contain any baby formula tins,” the spokesperson said.

He said the customer asked for some empty boxes and the local team were happy to provide them.

No stranger to controversy

The Hurstville store is no stranger to baby formula controversy either. Just hours earlier, a group of well-organised shoppers were filmed raiding the shelves for high-end baby formula.

“I was standing there talking to a staff member and saying how disgusting it was,” a customer told Yahoo7 News.

“She said there was nothing they could do.

“They were just taking two cans off the shelf, taking them outside and handing them to other people before coming back in and getting more.”

The woman claimed between 80 and 100 tins of baby formula were taken off the shelf.

The Woolies spokesperson reitterated their policy, saying they continue to closely manage the flow of stock so customers can have access to formula when they need it.

“We have a two tin purchase limit on baby formula in place and our store teams work hard to ensure stock is available for our customers,” they said.

In November, video surfaced of an organised group stockpiling baby formula tins outside the Woolworths Hurstville store.
