'I had no idea': Why Tassie grandma almost missed big lottery win

A grandmother who doesn’t answer calls from random numbers went several days oblivious to the fact she had become the newest winner of a major lottery draw.

Officials made multiple attempts to contact the woman, from Kingston in Tasmania, but never got through to her because she was screening her calls.

It wasn’t until she went back to Kingston Town Lotto to buy another ticket that she was informed of the life-changing news.

She won first prize in the Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot draw on Tuesday - taking home $200,000 after eventually checked her ticket Friday morning.

The woman was completely shocked and ecstatic at the news, explaining she would never had known if she hadn’t gone back into the store.

“I had no idea! I just came in to buy another entry. I can’t believe it,” she told Lucky Lotteries.

“I saw that I had a few missed calls, but I don’t answer calls from unknown numbers.

“I might have to start picking them up from now on if it means I’ve won some money.”

She said much of her winnings would be used to spoil grandchildren.

“I never really thought about what I would do with a prize like this because I never thought I would win!” she said.

“I’ll definitely use it to help out my grandchildren.”

She said she had only recently started buying tickets in Lucky Lotteries.

“I started playing Lucky Lotteries a few months ago and I’ve only won $10 here and there.

The ticket was the first winner sold at Kingston Town Lotto.
