Several people including a Romanian billionaire have died after their plane crashed into an empty office building.

Dan Petrescu, one of Romania's richest men, was a property developer and was on the plane along with his wife, Regina Petrescu, and 30-year-old son, Dan Stefan Petrescu, the BBC reported.

Also on board the plane reportedly piloted by Mr Petrescu, was Filippo Nascimbene and Claire Alexandrescou, with their 18-month-old son who had been baptised shortly before the crash, according to reports.

Ms Alexandrescou's mother, Miruna Anca Wanda Lozinschi, was also on the plane.

Journalist Radu Tudor reported that Mr Petrescu was on his way to visit his elderly mother.

Some media sites have reported there were seven people on the plane, however other reports and local officials say there were eight, including a co-pilot who perished following the crash.

What is certain is that all of those on the private plane were killed in the incident.

Romanian media site, Digi 24, reported the plane took off from Milan on Sunday at 1:03pm and crashed just moments later at 1:12pm.

Officials recall 'devastating' impact

According to Italian publication, Corriere della Serra, the plane crashed into a building in Milan and a witness reportedly said they saw flames coming out of the engine before the crash.

The building, which was under renovation at the time, caught fire on impact and some cars which were parked on the street nearby also caught fire.

No one was in the building at the time of the crash.

"The impact was devastating," Carlo Cardinali, an official of the Milan Fire Brigade said, according to Rai News.

"The impact was extremely violent, there was a real explosion, with the projection of this aircraft at various points."

Videos of the building show it engulfed in flames, with smoke billowing out, as the facade crumbles.

The aircraft reportedly disappeared from radars and didn't issue any signals for help.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway and the black box was recovered.
