Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are headed to Capitol Hill today to outline their proposals for slashing government spending. The two men will meet with Republican lawmakers in both the Senate and the House as part of President-elect Donald Trump's proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Gautam Mukunda, a lecturer at the Yale School of Management, joins Madison Mills and Josh Schafer on Catalysts to discuss whether Musk and Ramaswamy's drastic proposals could become reality. He acknowledges that a major overhaul of the government is something that is "desperately needed" and "long overdue," but isn’t convinced of Musk and Ramaswamy’s approach to the issue. "The approach that they're talking about taking is so profoundly mismatched to the needs of what the government actually has," Mukunda says, adding that simply firing federal employees may not solve deeper systemic problems. He highlights the importance of investing in areas like the IRS, where studies show that additional enforcement could significantly increase tax revenue by targeting high earners. That sentiment was echoed last week by H&R Block (HRB)CEO Jeff Jones on Market Domination: "What the American consumer needs the most... is a high-functioning IRS." More broadly, Mukunda expresses doubts about Musk’s skills translating to political success. “The government is different than a business… it's not the government's goal to run at a profit," Mukunda explains, adding “there are things that you can't make a profit from, but that have to be done.” To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Catalysts here.
