Half-price specials: Best Woolworths, Coles deals this week

Major supermarkets Woolworths and Coles each week slash the price of certain groceries by half.

These "loss leader" products are not on sale to make money for the supermarkets. They're lures to get customers into their store.

If a shopper is in their shop then they're not spending money with the rival – that's the simple rationale. Plus most customers would buy other full-priced products to top up their trolley.

The 50%-off specials also differentiate Coles and Woolworths from emerging threat Aldi. The challenger supermarket's weekly grocery specials don't get anywhere near half-price, although they're discounted off a lower base.
