If you’re talented at digital 3D or 2D modelling, proofreading and editing, good news: you’re better-placed than most Aussies to earn a buck for your skills, new research has revealed.

3D and 2D modelling is the most lucrative side hustle in Australia, with freelancers charging as much as $650 per job, according to research conducted by Canva.

But the average price per job for this side hustle is $126, followed by proofreading and editing at $121.

But experienced proofreaders and editors are able to hike their fees and charge as much as $195 per job, the data shows.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) experts are also in high demand, with these professionals able to earn as much as $351 a pop.

Illustrators and blog post writers are also some of the best-paid side hustlers on average, as well as animators, ghost writers, social media advertising guns, and video editors.

The research also showed that Australia is one of the best OECD countries in the world to have a side hustle, ranking third for the highest average fee that freelancers can earn at $766.

Switzerland is the best country to set up a side hustle, with average earnings at $875.

But if your strong suit isn’t digital skills, don’t despair; Airtasker data revealed exclusively to Yahoo Finance earlier this year revealed that swimming instructors were the most in-demand Airtaskers this year.

This was followed by bicycle repair specialists and stonemasons.

How to make your side hustle stand out among the competition

There are three things you can do to make your side hustle stand out: build a strong brand, work on your marketing strategy, and get clients to write testimonials, a Canva spokesperson said.

“Before you start, take the time to think about how you want to represent your services to the world. It’s particularly key to know your target market and research the best ways on how to appeal to them with your brand,” the spokesperson said.

It’s always a good idea to build your own website and invest in a website template and logo that represents your brand. Ensure that potential clients can easily find your past work and your contact details, too.

Then, plan your online marketing strategy, and consider the social media platforms you want your business to have a presence on.

“If you have your own business website, try your hand at SEO (search engine optimisation) strategies to get your page ranked higher on Google. With most users only ever visiting the first page of Google results, getting your business ranked highly is key,” the spokesperson said.

Blog posts can also reinforce your authority in your area of expertise.

Finally, great customer service and word of mouth will turn clients into loyal customers, which builds your reputation and trustworthiness. But this is something you can’t fake.

“Make sure to always respond quickly to customer inquiries and feedback so they aren’t waiting too long and getting frustrated with you,” the spokesperson said.

“You might want to build customer relationships further with reward schemes for loyal customers and service guarantees for those who need extra peace of mind when ordering from you for the first time.

“Ultimately, whether you spend a few hours a week or most of your time on your new side hustle business, your customers will be the ones who can make or break it.”
